Humphry Davy

A Cornish Chemist

Penzance scientist Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) invented the Davy Lamp in 1815. The lamp was intended not to light the way but to warn of the presence of high levels of methane gas. It. was vital in coal mines but very rarely used in Cornwall as there are no explosive gases in Cornish mines. Sir Humphry Davy was a renown chemist in his time who even discovered several alkali metals and other elements. A statue of Sir Humphry Davy stand in pride of place in the main high street of Penzance.
