smelting factory

The mines created a demand which led to the establishment of local industries.

There were: smelters for tin, copper and silver-lead; foundries and engineering works to make steam engines, rock drills and other mining equipment; and gunpowder, explosives and fuse works. Holman’s was a company with forges and workshops dotted over Cornwall. They produced many cast items for the mines from Kibbles to complex rock drills. Harvey’s of Hayle were world famous manufactures of steam engines and boilers.

The mines also consumed vast quantities of candles, rope, chain, gunpowder and fuses; all these products were manufactured in Cornwall for the local mining industry. Timber and coal were also used in very large amounts but were imported into the county.
