The Royal Visit 28th November 1980
On Friday 28th Nov 1980, Queen Elizabeth II visited Geevor for the opening ceremony of the newly developed Sub-Incline Extension.
The Queen travelled underground to 15 Level of Victory Shaft where the Sub-Incline Extension began, and where Her Majesty unveiled a plaque commemorating the opening. Photos show Her Majesty in a white overall provided by Geevor, though Her Majesty brought her own wellington boots and hard hat. The Queen proceeded further underground to 18 Level by way of the inclined tram which the miners were themselves to travel in. A plaque was unveiled to commemorate the day. The occasion of the Queens visit, accompanied by their Royal Highnesses the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Andrew, was marked by a special luncheon put on at the Mine’s Clubhouse. Many of the Geevor employees and their spouses were invited to attend and copies of the menu chosen by the Queen can be seen at Geevor.
