Metal Ore

cassiterite tin ore sample

Metal ores are very useful.

Ores are rocks that contain enough metal or metal compounds to make it worthwhile extracting them. For example, tin ore is used to make tin and iron ore is used to make iron and steel. Copper is easily extracted, but ores rich in copper are becoming more difficult to find.

The first metals people used were native metals; copper, silver and gold. These occurred as deposits of metal in the ground and could be made in to jewellery and tools.

There are also minerals in rocks which contain metals. These minerals need to be heated until the metal melts out.
